The school I went to today is having substantial building work done. They are all carrying on nobly against huge background noise and disruption. At the moment there is no staffroom and everyone is having to use the children's lavatories, and sometimes they must circumnavigate the entire site to get from one room to another practically next door in order not to cross the building site. If ever a staff deserved an award for carrying on cheerfully and efficiently under trying circumstances these teachers and their auxilliary staff assuredly do.

Sometimes when we look at the nineteenth century clogs with their metal taps to prevent the wooden soles wearing out too fast I ask the teacher to speculate what it must have been like to have a class full of children wearing such clogs in a classroom with a tiled or wooden floor. Teaching on a building site must have a similar effect on the head by the end of the day.

We had that a couple of years ago in the nursery. We were expecting to have a big "Bob the Builder" type theme with the children as a result, but they were totally oblivious unless something as impressive as a crane turned up!
