The weather forecast promised blizzards and deep snow overnight. So much so that I was wondering whether I would be able to get into work this morning.

I awakened to a thin frosting of damp snow and occasional flurries of sleet.

Nonetheless, fearing the worst, I dressed myself with a high degree of onionisation - dress, cardie, coat, shawl, scarf . . . and equipped myself with various useful tools for emergencies, and set off to work. The minor roads for the first five miles were unpleasantly slushy, but after that the main roads were clear and there were no problems on either Ferriby Hill or Thealby Hill.

The Farming Museum was freezing (one reason why it closes for the winter) but we did our evacuation training by which time the education room was either genuinely warming up or the contrast with the main museum building was marked enough for us to feel the difference. Whatever the reason most of us were down to the cardigan layer by this time, and we went on to have a slightly dull, but reasonably productive meeting.

I then finished my Christmas groceries shopping - by that I mean all the additional stores one needs over Christmas as opposed to the stuff one buys every week.
