Unlike the last weekend I was working we had 600 people throug the museum today for our "It's a Plaything" exhibition which launched this week and had a special fun day today.

Watch out carefully for the Sindy doll on 1 minute 51 seconds - the elegant ball gown was made by my mother copying her own newest evening dress (made to a Vogue pattern) but in left over fabric from her wedding dress a dozen years earlier.

My role today was facilitating something in excess of 60 children designing flags for bunting. The prize for the best was a day out at Butlins for the family, and the runners up got boy and girl goody bags.

Enjoyed the video clip. I had a spacehopper and Mastermind and won a Sindy doll & furniture in a competition.

Your Sindy looked very elegant. My favourite fashion doll was a Daisy. My Grandma made her a couple of dresses using some old dresses of my mum's. The cuff formed the bodice of the doll's dress and the sleeve made the skirt part.

  My Sindy was no mere fashion doll - she and her sisters had a rich family life with husbands, children, jobs, holidays, friends, religion, education and illnesses - all carefully documented in dozens of tiny books. All this went on into my teens, carefully hidden from my friends.
  
  Years later I discovered that Liz had been playing even more shame-faced and solitary (no sister) imaginative games with her dolls at the same time. Our friendship went through a rocky patch at 11, and by the time we were back on an even keel the public face was teenage sophistication and questions about imaginative games were not asked.

Don't know why we kept our dolls' lives so secret - we weren't actually very old!
I pity modern little girls who buy the ready outfitted Barbie Dolls as "Nutcracker Princess" and so on - my favourite clothes, like yours and Ethelred's, were ones made by my Mum and Grandma - notably a bridal gown made by grandma out of spare net curtaining!

  I remember a period in my very early teens when I would leave children's books at home rather than be seen reading one at lunch time by the pseudo-sophisticates in our year who were already big on boys and other teenagerish stuff, and carefully not mentioning anything to do with imagination and playing pretend games. Even with people whom I suspected were still happy with the world of make-believe there was level of circumspection: "Liz might be OK but what if she talks to Babz, Di or Carol?" (I can't see any of them, especially Babz, being deeply into dolls, can you? I think that the great gonk row put paid to open pretend play after Mrs. Drewery told us not to be so childish. (She may just have meant the row, but I interpreted it as meaning the play as well.)
