Two special uses of coal in years gone by come to mind:
Ladies especially loved making beautiful coral flowers formed on a piece of coal by adding salt and possibly other ingredients.
My first home made radio used a small shining piece of coal along with a small piece of bee-frame wire for detecting radio signals. Very crude one might say, but looking back it was different and that made it interesting - and it worked!
